Have you recently installed a new program?

Or an update to a program?

Although you say you've tried a system restore and it reported there were no changes to make, have you tried a system restore to an earlier date? Such as last week or earlier?

It all started when some kind of reg clean program appeared and was automatically checking for errors and cleaning them. I don't remember installing it unless one of the kids did it without knowing. I did uninstall this program in the hope that everything would go back to normal but it didn't Exclamation

I have winferno which came from McAfee, this program was already on the PC before the problem so it is not that that caused it. It must have been this other program that has since been removed.

Although it does not solve the problem of missing startup links, have you by any chance got the "Cleanup Desktop Icons" program set for a very low period?
if yes, that would explain why the desktop icons disappear.

To replace them back in the "Startup" list, you need to locate the appropriet .exe file (as previously mentioned) then "Right Click" and drag it to the user Startup folder, when you then release the mouse button, select "Place Shortcut Here"

A easy way of doing this is to open My Computer, then minimise it (do not close it),
Then open My Computer "AGAIN"
Now re-size the window so it only covers half of the desktop.
Click the other My Computer icon which is also on the blue information bar (next to the clock) and also re-size that to cover the other half of the desktop.
You now have 2 My Computer windows on display.

Using one of them, locate your Start menu, once located do not change the window.
From the other window, you can now brows the "Programs" folder to find the .exe files, then simply drag from one window to the other and select the paste shortcut here option.
(Don't forget, "Right Click" to drag the files)

i will try this later after McAfee has done its scan, due to start at 8am and usually takes about 4 hours Exclamation

Obviously, this program has removed registry entries that it shouldn't have. The only realistic way you are going to fix things (easily) is if you do a system restore to before the program was installed.

Have you tried doing that?

I tried that when it first happened but got the message that there was nothing to change as no changes had been made Exclamation

Do you have the Windows XP disc by any chance?

If you do, then perhaps a repair install might be the way forward.

Alternatively, you could try starting in Last Known Good Configuration. This is an option on the menu you will get if you keep tapping the F8 key as the PC starts up.
