PostSubject: no sound after reinstalling win xp   Fri Mar 06, 2009 2:22 am

Hi,hope you can help,

I recently reinstalled wnixp home on a pc with no speakers conected. Later when I reconnected them I had no sound at all. I checked to see if they weren't simply muted and saw that there's no device installed. There's no soung card it's integrated on the motherboard. Do I need to dl the sound driver from the mb makers site? If so can I find it without having to open the pc? Or can I dl a generic 1?

Thx

If you have "manufacturer's recovery CDs" to reinstall Windows, the motherboard drivers would normally be included. If using a proper "Microsoft" Windows XP CD, do you have a separate Motherboard CD with drivers for the various on-board components - Sound, Graphics, Modem, Network Adapter etc?

Otherwise, download and run Belarc Advisor which should give you details of all hardware and software in the PC. You should then be able to download the relevant motherboard drivers from the manufacturer's website.

Also take a look in "Device Manager" to see if any of the items have a yellow exclamation mark next to them.
If they do, simply remove/delete the item with the yellow exclamation mark,
(don't worry, it/they will be re-placed when the PC re-starts)
re-start the PC and then hopefully windows will search for and install the driver that is required.

This however usually works best if connected to the internet.

Although this may sound strange, I have also in the past come across this problem when a " Dial-up Modem" was not completely set up.

I had this trouble or similar once when I reformated - no sound - couldn't find what was wrong - asked forum helpers and did everything they advised - it turned out that the maker knew this would happen if a reformat was done and there was a fix for it on their web page. Could be something similar for you. Zante
