| I am using XP and recently changed from Tiscali to BT. Whilst using Tiscali I used Outlook Express for the emails and everytime I opened up the Internet or OE link, a DIAL UP CONNECTION window would open and automatically make the connection. Since changing over to BT and Yahoo Mail, apart from initial teething problems, it has gone well and I have linked OE into it. Strangely enough, it is now working. One problem exists and I hope someone can help me out. I click on the link to BT Yahoo Online and it opens up with no problems and I notice that the DIAL UP CONNECTION window does not appear, which is good. My links to the Yahoo Mail are working well and the messages also go to OE. However, once I am looking at OE, the DIAL UP CONNECTION window pops up even though it is not required. It states that it is connecting to 'Broadband Connection', shortly after that another window titled CONNECTING BROADBAND CONNECTION appears and this tells me that it is 'Connecting thro' WAN MINIPORT PPPOE' Obviously there is a time-out situation, as later another window titled ERROR CONNECTING TO BROADBAND CONNECTION pops up with Error 678. I cannot do anything until I close these windows but then they appear again after 60 seconds. As they seem to be superfluous to requirements, how can I permanently disable them?? |

| Am I assuming you are now using a Broadband connection? (or still on Dialup?) If so, it sounds like a slight conflict with each one not knowing which is connecting. Have you taken a look in the Internet Option > connection, then on the settings disable "Never Dial a Connection" _________________ If it ain't broke. Don't fix it.

| Go to "Control Panel > Internet Options", click the Connections tab and select the option Never dial a connection. This should eliminate any unwanted attempts at automatic dialling. _________________ Mike

| Thank you for your prompt replies. I am confused now because the DIAL UP CONNECTION window appears stating that it is connected to Broadband Connection. However, when I check out Settings or go to Internet Options (Connections) it is highlighted on Dial Up Connection. I should explain that there are 4 items here, Broadband Connection, Broadband Connection 2, Dial Up Connection and Dial up Connection 2. I suspect that as I am on broadband only (with BT Total Broadband) maybe the other 3 items are superfluous. Should I remove them? I never did before, in case they were meant to be there. I don't like deleting things that I do not understand..!! The section below is enabled with Never Dial a Connection. If I have to disable that, which of the other 2 choices do I enable?? |

| I assume that you're connecting with a USB ADSL Modem and not with a Router? If that's the case, did you uninstall any software associated with the old Tiscali service when you installed the BT software? It's possible that you're experiencing some sort of conflict if there are two sets of USB Modem software still installed. _________________ Mike

| At present I have one of those new Home Hub thingys from BT. Obviously, I removed the modem that was supplied by Tiscali, it was a SAGEM. I note that I still have the SAGEM software installed, so I'll uninstall that and see what happens. Thanks |

| Mike Have uninstalled my SAGEM software and restarted computer, but no difference. Just to confirm, I do not have a router. Connection is via ethernet cable. |

| Oops, sorry, have just realised that the Home Hub is a wireless ROUTER....! Am I stupid or what? |

| As you're connecting to the router by ethernet cable, your internet connection within the Network Connections folder will be the "Local Area Connection". I'd be inclined, therefore, to delete any old "Dialup" connections that are still shown in Network Connections. | Quote: | | The section below is enabled with Never Dial a Connection. Your current setting is correct. The "dot" should be in the button for "Never dial a connection". This should prevent Windows from dialling automatically, but for some reason this is being overridden by something. _________________ Mike

| Hi to Old Fogey: The Internet Connections are as my second thread above. Hi Mike: I opened Control Panel - NETWORK CONNECTIONS and the below configuration was revealed. BROADBANDBroadband Connection Disconnected Wan Miniport PPPOE Broadband Connection 2 Disconnected Wan Miniport PPPOE DIAL UPDial Up Connection Disconnected USB ADSL Wan Adapter Dial Up Connection 2 Disconnected PCI SoftV92 Data Fax Modem INTERNET GATEWAYInternet Connection Disconnected Internet Connection LAN OR HIGH SPEED INTERNET1394 Connection Connected 1394 Adapter #2 Local Area Connection Connected Realtek RTL139/810X Family Does this help? If I remove the Dial up Connections from the Internet Connections as you suggest, can they be re-instated if it goes pear shaped? Is it best to remove them from the Network Connections page or from the Internet Connections or does it not matter? |

| Firstly, go into "Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs" and ensure there isn't any remaining software installed for your previous ISP and its connectivity software. If there's nothing in there, I'd delete (right click and select Delete) these three: BROADBAND Broadband Connection Disconnected Wan Miniport PPPOE
Broadband Connection 2 Disconnected Wan Miniport PPPOE
DIAL UP Dial Up Connection Disconnected USB ADSL Wan AdapterLeave these ones as they are:Dial Up Connection 2 Disconnected PCI SoftV92 Data Fax Modem
INTERNET GATEWAY Internet Connection Disconnected Internet Connection
LAN OR HIGH SPEED INTERNET 1394 Connection Connected 1394 Adapter #2
Local Area Connection Connected Realtek RTL139/810X FamilyThe "Dialup Connection 2" is a genuine "dialup" connection using a V90/V92 56k Modem and not an ADSL connection relating to your previous ISP. The "1394 Connection" is a Firewire connection and not normally used for networking (although it can be used for direct computer-to-computer network connections). | Quote: | | If I remove the Dial up Connections from the Internet Connections as you suggest, can they be re-instated if it goes pear shaped? |
Running the installation CD for your previous ISP and its USB ADSL Modem would reinstall these items but there shouldn't be any reason for requiring them. You are now getting your internet access over the LAN from the router. This is a simple ethernet connection, with the "Modem/Router" establishing the ADSL connection to the ISP. _________________ Mike

| Hi Mike I checked the Add/Remove and could not see anything remotely connected with the previous ISP I have deleted the 3 items that you suggested and noted that 'Dial Up Connection 2' is the only possible connection now listed. Unfortunately, the windows DIAL UP CONNECTION followed by CONNECTING DIAL UP CONNECTION 2 are now opening (second window just has one word 'Dialing' therein Still frustrating..... |

| OK, delete the entry for "Dial Up Connection 2" as well. If necessary, a dialup connection to an ISP can easily be created again. _________________ Mike

| Sorry to just jump in but is it possible that some setting in Outlook Express now needs changing ?:| Isn't there a box in OE where you can uncheck " always connect ...."Sorry, I don't have OE on this pc so can't check it out but I remember there's something along those lines and it will make OE try to dial a connection. EDIT, had a bit of a google and this is what I came up with: In Outlook Express click Tools -> Accounts... choose your default mail account - click ' properties' - > choose the ' connection' tab. In this window you can choose to [ Always Connect To This Account Using] - Change from dial-up to LAN. Hope this helps _________________ ANNE R
