PostSubject: computer keeps restarting   Tue Jan 20, 2009 10:37 pm

hey guys I'm having a problem with my computer constantly restarting.
I had to uninstall Internet explorer 8 yesterday because it wasn't compatible with my new printer software. I had no problem this morning when I booted up but, then windows updated and when I restarted the computer it wouldn't stop restarting. It gets to the windows logo with the progress bar and then it goes start back to restarting again. I can't even get to my log on screen. Can someone please help me? TY

Have you tried starting in "Safe Mode"?
When the system starts to boot up keep 'intermittently' pressing F8 (possibly followed by "F5") then select "Start the PC using either Last know Good condition" or System Restore. (or something similar to those words)

As Phil (oldfogy) suggests, try booting the "Last Known Good Configuration". If that doesn't work then, from the same Boot Menu, see if you can start it in "Safe Mode with Command Prompt". At the prompt, type in...

[For Windows XP]
%SystemRoot%\System32\Restore\rstrui.exe

[For Windows Vista]
%SystemRoot%\System32\rstrui.exe

...and press Enter. This will open the normal System Restore window from which you may be able to restore an earlier working version.

Glad to hear it's all working again, but any chance of letting us know how you managed it as it may also help someone else at a later date.

Thanks

Hi OF

I thought lots of peeps knew the standard way of correcting frequent involantary restarts on XP scratch

To switch off XP’s annoying habit of automatically restarting: press [Windows] + [Pause/Break] to open the System Properties Control Panel. Switch to the Advanced tab and click Settings under Startup and Recovery. Untick the box marked Automatically Restart and click OK.

It's as easy as that and no typing required Very Happy

Peter

Hi Peter.

Yes that will stop the actual re-starting because it will lock on the BSOD on the first re-start with the error code.

But it does not resolve the issue which this OP seems to have solved.

Although I think it was probably just a driver malfunction between IE8 and the printer.
But it's always nice when the original poster actually lets people know how they resolved it themselves.
