I wasn't sure where to put this, but I'm fairly sure it's a Vista SP1 problem, so chose here

Two days after installing SP1, the above programme simply refused to respond at all. I couldn't even close it using the task manager, in the end I had to shut mt laptop down by taking the battery out, and obviously don't want to do that often.

All has been well with it for a few days, but it is now frozen again. Is there any other way of forcing it to close? I will then uninstall it

The way to shut down a computer that has frozen is to press and hold the power on button. You may need to hold it for up to 30 seconds.

Also, if any computer is frozen, always try pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del and then wait a while to see if task manager opens. When it does, you can get Windows to force any open application to end.

If Live Messenger continues to give problems, try removing it and downloading a fresh copy to reinstall.

Hi Dave, my power button just puts the laptop into hibernation. As mentioned, task manager cannot shut down the programme. I've now uninstalled the damn thing but the window is still sitting there.

I'm just going to run ccleaner and see if that gets rid

You should be able to select in "Control Panel> Power Options" what the laptop does when you press the power button but, in any case, holding it in for about four seconds should force a shut down.

Oh well, it seems the problem is solved for now, awaiting a reply from Microsoft support. I'm not holding my breath.

What happened was, when I finished running Superantispyware, I absentmindedly clicked on restart now.It then went into logging off mode for 10 minutes, so I tried holding the start button in, the screen went blank but it didn't shut down.

Out with the battery again.

When I started it up, all is normal except Messenger isn't there. Shame cos I did use it, but I don't feel like re installing until I know the problem is solved

Hi Anne,

when I first installed Live messenger on this vista pc of mine I too had problems occasionally with it not responding.

It now runs fine without me actually doing anything ....... I think some of the vista "recommended" updates have helped with stability.

*I take it you hadn't installed any of the plugins/add-ons that the kids all use ..... like Plus for example ??
or could anybody else have installed such?

No Anne, nothing like that. It worked without any problems before I installed SP1, and even afterwards it was working all right when it wasn't freezing.

I might download and install again when I have a bit of time

Just thought I'd let you know I reinstalled Messenger two days ago, and no further problems so far.
