I'm not really bothered, since my laptop is working fine, but I haven't been offered SP1, and wondered if any others are still waiting for it

The problem, as I understand it, was with incompatible drivers and I would have thought that this issue had been overcome by now, so that it would be available. However, you're better to be safe rather than sorry!

Being the reckless idiot that I am, I downloaded SP1 and installed it long before any of the problems surfaced, but I did have an Acronis True Image backup so it didn't matter if it went pear-shaped. In the event, the only thing that wouldn't work was a USB "dialup" modem which had previously been OK with XP drivers.

Perhaps someone else can confirm that they haven't yet received it via automatic updates.

If it ain't broke, don't mess about with it is my philosophy though

You can uninstall SP1 if you need to Anne, maybe worth trying it out?

Hi Anne,

I have dealt with loads of users (on CA) looking for the reason they haven't been offered SP1 ...... as Mike has already said the main reason is the presence of incompatible drivers on your system.

What you could do is launch windows updates and check out the "view available updates" , look through the optional and recommended ones .... any offers of drivers for sound or graphic card?

This could be an indication of you having drivers that are known to give problems and windows updates is offering you updated ones ..... install and then you could just be offered SP1 the next time you check.

Also be aware that if you have chosen to leave any "important" updates you will not get offered SP1 until you either "hide" or install that update as SP1 will only come in on it's own as it has to be installed alone.

Lastly, do you have a Logitech webcam installed by any chance?

This is another one found to be responsible for SP1 not showing its face Wink

Let's know how you get on

Hi Anne, I have updates configured to download, but to let me choose when to install them, but I always do install those marked as important or recommended

Re drivers, I seem to remember there was a separate section in XP specifically for searching for driver updates, this doesn't appear in Vista so I assume it's automatic, but I've never received a driver update.

I am inclined to leave it alone to be honest, I'm not one to go looking for trouble, and since I have a broken wrist at present, the laptop is my main source of entertainment

no web cam at all, so it can't be that

Fortunately SP1 came pre-installed on my new Medion MD8833 PC and I have not encountered any problems.

Although it came pre-installed, Medion would have given it a thorough testing, but even they can't allow for every likely occurrence or hardware and software install.

But like I said, no problems here.

Hello again Anne Smile

Windows Updates when set to automatic has two options ....
to install Important updates only or install Important and recommended updates..

Optional updates are not installed automatically and so need input from the user.
Most of the time driver updates will be optional or will at least be an update where you are asked about it before its installation.

(Even with updates set to Automatic there are some where microsoft will require user acceptance before it just goes ahead and installs. )

I understand that for the time being you want to leave things alone and don't have time for any hassles that may come, but eventually, like SP2 for XP, Vista's service pack 1 will become a requirement.

When you're feeling brave, launch windows updates and check if you have optional driver updates, alternatively, driver updates can be found by going to the manufacturers websites of your sound and graphics hardware.

If any problems arise we are always here to take you through any steps required to get back to normal, and of course SP1 can be removed via programs and features in the control panel (same as Add/Remove programs in XP).

One other tip ..... when you get round to installing SP1, it takes around 45 mins from start to finish, a few reboots too so just let it do what it's doing as some think the pc is frozen .. it's not Wink

I would certainly recommend disabling anything that might interrupt the smooth progress of SP1's installation, just to be safe.

With my other PC's, I found by updating them first made the process a lot quicker. (at least it seemed to)
I suppose mainly because it did not have to download and install too many other updates.

I can't beleive nothing has been done STILL for those Vista users who have the Sigmatel drivers !!!

This has been going on since about May of this year Exclamation

Maybe you could contact the manufacturers of your pc Anne?
If nothing is done I would be demanding my money back ...... eventually this Service Pack is going to be required for other updates to install.

Do let's know how you get on if you hear anything .
