PostSubject: IE8 as an update yes or no?   Wed Apr 29, 2009 2:22 pm

Hi,

A load of Updates are "available" for my Vista PC. (Most are for Office, but IE8 is there as a recomended update).

Is it OK to download and run this yet? I have heard that some problems are being encountered by people.

I use both IE & Firefox (Some things don't "Like" firefox, and some don't "like" Internet explorer.

Any thoughts please?

Thanks - Dave Smile

Hi Dave,

well I have hung back for the time being and have been monitoring a thread on computeractive where members are posting how they are getting on with the new update.

I will likely be installing it on my own vista pc within the next couple of days as everyone so far is reporting a successful update.

The newer version has a "compatibility" tab so if you visit a website that is not yet running too well on IE8 it gives you a button to click and the page will render as though on IE7 .... sounds a good feature.
Apparently a torn notepad like icon will appear on the end of the address bar when IE8 detects the website loaded has problems and you then click this to have the browser act like IE7

If you would like a little look here's the thread .. some of the members have posted some tips too which could be useful:

Thanks Anne,

Sorry for the delay - been working scratch

Will have a look, but think it's probably OK, I use Firefox on my desktop Vista PC, so IE is really only for the things that display oddly on FF (My Bank for one)

I'll have a look and post back

Thanks - Dave Smile

That's good news Dave! Very Happy

Just remember that if you suddenly get a problem with a webpage that has always worked well it might need to be viewed in "compatibility mode" .... even if the small icon doesn't appear on the end of the address bar.

For webpages that are known to render better in IE7 you should see an icon of a kind of notepad page which is torn (ripped) clicking on this will then switch it to be viewed in compatibility mode.

If you have a site that doesn't show this icon but the page still seems to be not functioning correctly then click on Tools from the top tool bar and then *compatibility view or compatibility view settings, where you can add sites to a list a bit like the popup blocker list.

*I have also now installed it ...We had problems the other day with a banking website, the icon didn't appear in the address bar but the site kept on giving login errors and other strange errors about login details ... I used the above method from the tools menu but still had to refresh the page too before it finally worked.

If you have any issues anyway I'm sure one of us can help Wink

Anne

I've bit the bullet and updated to IE8 myself now.

So far, so good. But as I tend to use Firefox most of the time, I might not spot any issues for a while.

It does seem faster, even faster than FF.

Hi Dave,

yes I think IE 8 is much faster too!

*Another problem that might be encountered is to keep seeing "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" when clicking on a link say from google search results or from another website and that link has opened in a new tab.... refreshing the page almost always brings the content up.

clearing browser history and temp internet files seems to fix this iisue;
