I have obtained a second hand laptop for my son's school work which runs Windows ME. The pcmcia socket won't respond to a wireless modem (Belkin). Is it likely he'll be able to use a USB wireless dongle instead?

That shouldn't be a problem, I've used both PCMCIA and USB WiFi adapters in a Win 98SE laptop. Win ME shouldn't be significantly different.

The disadvantage with versions of Windows prior to XP is that they don't have wireless networking built in (Wireless Zero Configuration), so you are forced to use the software provided with the adapter.

Yes. We bought 2 identical lap tops, one for each child. One has recognised the Belkin PCMCIA card, but when I put the same card in the other one, it couldn't see it.
I was thinking that that slot was KO'd so was thinking of using a wireless USB instead.

Unfortunately the specs of the 2 computers are too low for XP.

I don't suppose by any chance the PCMCIA slot has been disabled in the BIOS?

...just a thought. Idea

Yea, two fully working laptops!

****
I have only one PCMCIA card at present, it works in one of them but not the other.

I'll check the settings in BIOS - hadn't thought of that!

Also check in Device Manager, see if there are any yellow exclamation marks (errors)

If there are, then by removing the offending item followed by re-booting the system should re-install the driver.
Then try the card again.
