Peter,

Can you be more specific about the actual problem? With a "wired" ethernet connection, Windows 7 should be no different from any other version of Windows - plug in the cable, the "Local Area Connection" gets its IP address automatically by DHCP from the router and you're online.

Is the computer getting its correct IP address from the router?

With the computer connected to the router with an ethernet cable, open a Command Prompt window ("Start > Run", type cmd and click OK) then, at the prompt, type...

ipconfig /all

...and press Enter. This will show details of all network adapters installed in the PC. Right click in the Command Prompt window, "Select All" and press Enter to copy the details to the clipboard. Paste the details into a forum reply here.

If you are unable to paste the details directly from the computer, because it cannot get online, paste them instead into a blank "Notepad" file, transfer the file to a working PC and copy/paste the details from there.

The "ipconfig /all" details indicate that none of the network adapters has connected to the router - they all show Media disconnected".

If connecting with an ethernet cable, are you using the correct type, i.e. not using a "crossover" cable, which is used to connect two computers directly rather than connecting to a router?

Mike I have just been having another play about with it and it has connected wirelessly
I have no idea how, I seemed to be going round in circles then it connected
the ethernet cable I was using last night is the one I allways use on another computer so I guess it is the correct one

thanks for your help and interest

I have just installed 7 on my old computer with no troubles - except of my own making! all working well. I wasn't going to bother but I got a PC mag the other day with the install CD on it and all the info inside which gave clear and understandable instructions so I thought why not?

Today I am going to have another go at getting online so am interested in the info here, Thanks, Zante.

PS I haven't got programs in as yet so I might still be in for an interesting time!

I'm up and running Windows 7.
I have not had a single problem as yet.
It runs smooth as anything and a lot quicker than XP used to run.
Then again I am on a brand new PC.
All my programs have installed fine.
I had to run one as XP compatibility(and run as admin)
But all the rest run fine.
I'm well pleased with it.
It will be interesting to see any differences in October.
