PostSubject: ISP number / windows7   Thu Aug 06, 2009 4:52 am

My question below - which I thought would be a simple one sent to Bigpond! I don’t want help setting internet explorer up I just wanted the ISP (Bigpond is my ISP) phone number! So does anyone know what to do about this problem. Is there anywhere on main computer I can look it up? Can you skip this step etc. Everything else has gone great, no trouble, Windows 7 installed smoothly and everything seems to be working properly – mind you I wouldn’t have done this to my main PC! But don’t mind mucking around with the second one. Zante PS Did look this problem up online and most of the answers were to ring your ISP!

Dear Support People (Bigpond),

I am setting up a second PC with Windows7 (Release Candidate/Beta)and when setting up Internet Explorer it asks me for my ISP phone number. I can't find this anywhere - could you tell me what it is? Thank you.

I did ring support number about this but I think they said Windows7 wasn't supported with this - I didn't quite understand what they meant.

The operating system - as asked for below will be Windows7.

I cannot think of any possible reason why Internet Explorer should want or ask for your ISP's phone number. It shouldn't even need your IP (Internet Protocol) address number, which might be a bit more relevant.

Where exactly are you being asked for this information?

Except if there was an option to set up for a dial-up Internet connection?

I'll check it out again and get back tomorrow - but it was when I was starting the getting connected wizard. Zante.

Ah, good point. It's so long since I've been involved with configuring "dialup" connections that "the obvious" didn't occur to me.

I'll just plead either "insanity" or a "senior moment"! Smile

Uh Oh! Sorry for false alarm - I plead insanity as well - or at least tiredness from working all day on the Windows7 thing! When I went into the setup wizard it only gave one option to connect which I presumed at the time was what windows7 had nicely chosen for me.

When I went back to check today I found the checkbox at the bottom that said 'show all options' - and there was the broadband option of course.

Moral of this story, apart from the embarrassment - is 'read all the stuff' properly before going off on tangent! Cheers, Zante.
