PostSubject: Router access issues   Fri Dec 16, 2011 7:51 pm

Hi,

I have just reloaded Windows, and eveything is going back together nicely - or it was...

I typed in my routers ip address 192.168 etc, and got to the "enter user name and password" bit, but when I enter the user name and password, I am now getting an "invalid password" message.

Just in case anyone thinks I've forgotton it, it is on dymo tape under the router, and I have been accessing it regularly over the past few weeks because of my CCTV monitoring setup to my iphone and PC. My iphone needs the ip address given by Virgin to my router - this changes each time we have a power cut or the router is rebooted.

EDIT: I am then unable to close the box, or IE window unless I use Task Manager.., as it says "Authentication Failure"

From my Laptop, I can type the same ip address, and I get the Log in password screen. The settings are "remebered" on this, and it logs in with no problem.

Even if I type in the password I have set - on the laptop it still connects, but on the desktop it doesn't

I would imagine that resetting the router (the trick with a pin) would make no difference.

Any ideas?

I have also tried pasting the password, using chrome, and tried using a wireless adapter - none of which have made any difference.
EDIT: Also tried disabling firewall, AV - I even reloaded Windows from a clean install (had to as a system restore co**ed up) and tried to access the router as soon as I'd got the LAN software installed from the Motherboard disc, with nothing else installed!

I think the first thought would be to check either or both the CAPs lock button or and the Num Lock button.

No, pressing the reset button does not alter the password, only all the other setting are reverted back to manufactures defaults.

One thing you could also try is one of the may "See Password" programs. At least then (if it works) you can see what is going wrong.

Most of which are very tiny programs, and when you hover over the ********* marks it reveals what is actually there.
Although I will admit the one I use occasionally is only about 90% effective.

SeePassword 2.05

Edit.
Actually you can download it direct from here.
I just downloaded the one from MediaFire and it's identical to the one I would have sent you, including the SN.

Since posting, I have managed to get it working on Google Chrome, at the moment thats OK.

I just installed again and it would not show my password on the router either, but then again I knew it was not 100% as I have used it in the past, both successfully and also unsuccessfully.
(But it has got me me out of trouble on at least one occasion when I needed it)

If you use Firefox, also try checking out "that hidden" well it's not really hidden, just that most people do not know it has a saved and show password setting in the security settings.

But at least you seem to have found a way around the problem which is the main thing.

Trying to minimise what I install, so havent got FireFox installed.

I will leave the password viewer on the PC - as you say - it might get me out of trouble one day.

Thanks
