PostSubject: Connecting to Laptop Problems   Fri Mar 11, 2011 2:53 pm

Hi Mike and others Very Happy I've just installed a new Virgin Media Super Hub via wire to my mainXP pc. I have successfully connected to the Internet on both the pc
and my Vista laptop wirelessly. However, my son's laptop is playing silly beggers. He has a Sony Vaio, OS Windows 7.

There wasn't a problem with the old modem with his computer and he has just informed that the Internet connected straight away to his old Windows XP laptop. The system on the Vaio says there is a connection to the Internet but when you try and connect there is just 'problem loading page' which normally comes up because there is no Internet connection. The icon at the bottom of pages, just has a wedge of lines. We have been all afternoon trying to sort it out but to no avail.

I'm wondering, is it Windows 7?

Any ideas what the problem would be?

Thanks very much.

Has the Windows 7 Laptop got its proper IP address from the "Super Hub"? To check this go to "Start > Run" type in...

cmd.exe /k ipconfig /all

...and click OK. (Note the three spaces.) This will show details of all network adapters installed in the PC. It should probably have a 192.168.x.x address, but if it has a 169.254.x.x address or 0.0.0.0 then there is a problem.

I have a feeling that I've seen a posting somewhere else about a problem connecting Windows 7 to Virgin's new Hub, but I don't see why that should be the case. If you still have a router that worked reliably with the Win 7 Laptop, and I'm assuming this is Virgin's Cable service, you could plug that into one of the new Hub's LAN ports and continue to connect wirelessly to the old router for internet access.

Hi Mike, thanks for getting back to me. I have tried the above and the IP address is correct.

I am going to contact Virgin and see what they say. I don't fancy connecting the old router, as you have suggested. Another socket, required for a start. Rolling Eyes

Thanks for all your help. Will let you know what Virgin say, as others might be interested.

Hi Just thought I'd you know that there does not seem to be a problem with the new Virgin Hub and Windows 7 because it works fine with my daughters laptop. There must be some sort of conflict with the Sony Wireless connection and the Virgin Hub. My son is looking into it, apparently Rolling Eyes
