You could chose to use a DVD-9 (DL)
If you want to, just change the setting in ConvertXtoDVD in the "Encoding" options of settings.

Nero (if you use it) also has the facility to "Crop" parts of a video, although you would have to go through the process twice and make sure you remember the exact time of the first crop point. (but a bit long winded way of doing it)

Or, you could run the file through "AutoGordianKnot" (AutoGK) and select the 2 disc option, that will then create 2 files of equal size of 700MB.

Other than that, the main program I use for splitting files is "Boilsoft Video Splitter" "AVI/MPEG/RM/WMV Splitter" but it's not a free program, but there is a trial version available.

Take a look at some of the DL site from here.
http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=VI%2FMPEG%2FRM%2FWMV+Splitter&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

Glad to hear you managed to get it sorted.

No doubt by now you have also discovered that even after splitting a file, the original is still kept intact, so just delete it if it's no-longer required.

Boilsoft also do a very nice Video Joiner, if that's also of any use to you.
You can "select multiple files" to import into the joiner, which saves going back and forth to select different files.

(If you use it, always make sure the first part of the video to be joined is at the top of the list, and the last part at the bottom)
You can join as many parts as you want, although it does throw a wobbly sometimes if the files are not of the same format.

Did you burn directly with ConvertXtoDvd?
Did the movie play on your PC after converting with ConvertXtoDvd?
Did the disc play on your PC?

Personally I prefer and always convert the movie and save to the HDD, test the movie (sometimes) then burn separately with Nero, (obviously any other burn ware will do, but Nero is just my choice as it never fails me).

As I have never burnt directly with ConvertXtoDvd or any other transcoding program, I don't know if this may be a common problem, but if you say ( it just showed the name of the film title on a blue background...) then I would suspect a burning problem.

Just in-case it's a settings problem with ConvertXtoDvd:

Thanks for the info.
Fortunately I have not suffered any problems with it to-date, but then again I'm still using v3.1.0.24.

Another useful "Ad-on" is "BatchXtoDVD" which runs from it's own folder so no need to actually install it.
For ease of use Just drop it into the VSO main folder, then place a shortcut on the desktop.

You can select multiple movie files to automatically convert one after another into seperate dvd's, (which saves having to keep loading individual files then starting the next movie).
Or load multiple files to add and convert to one dvd.

When (and if selected) it will automatically start the conversion process when the "Start Conversion" button is selected.

I'm currently using Beta version 0.0.0.24 without any problems.
In fact it's a damn good ad-on.
(File size = 716KB inc text document)

You can DL a copy of the script from here:
http://forum.videohelp.com/topic311032.html

Just scroll down to the 6th reply from "jimmalenko" or google:
"convertxtodvd batch processor"

eidt
I just DL the script files, but they don't make any sense to me, so if interested drop me a PM with your email address and I'll send you a copy of what I have, it's also a free program, so no breaking the rules (makes a change)

edit
Link does not seem to work, so google.
