Hello,im looking for an e-mail antivirus scanner to use in conjunction with avira antivir.I want a similar thing to the e-mail scanner that comes with AVG8.I tried the add-on that accompanies spyware doctor, but it is not free to use.

Have never tried "vira antivir" so can't comment on it.

However you could try/use "Avast" which is a free program with a built-in email scanner and is also an excellent program that will also be recommended by quite a few other people around here.

Hello phil,i tried avast before and it aint fit to clean aviras boots. If i cant find an e-mail guard,as simple to use as avg 8(nothing for the user to do basically) I will either have to pay for the e-mail function in spyware doc or switch to avast or avg8.
BTW i cant believe how few people use avira, maybe its the lame e-mail protection side of it that makes people look elsewhere, its fast and thorough in its scans

Avast, Avira and AVG are the front runners in the free AV programs. Personally, I'd rather pay for mine - and NOD32 is about the best there is.

At about £54 for a three year licence, it works out at about 33p per week. Hardly expensive.

It checks for updates hourly and updates may be issued more than once a day. Unlike most others where daily is the best offered.

Hello phil,i have a couple of questions regarding avast, maybe you could help.....

1.Is there a setting where i can tell the scanner to move any found file to in to the chest area,so i can
leave the scan to reach 100% without the scan stopping for user input

2.Is there anything to change/input into the e-mail scanner for it to use in my outlook e-mail account.

3.Is there meant to be a footnote on an incoming e-mail to say avast has checked it.
As I don't have Avast on this particular PC my answers are going to be a bit vague.

1. I have never come across such a setting, but will take a closer look later on Monday.
(yes it is a pain having to sit there waiting so you would have thought there might be a setting for that)
However, because such things as cracks and keygens are now being flagged more and more as Trojans and possible virus (which some of them technically are) by AV programs it's not always a good idea to have it set that way if it is possible that is, or the next time you come to use it, "it's not there" and it's all too easy to forget to look in the Virus Chest, in-fact that was the reason I stopped using before, although the full reason was I forgot how to open the the chest and replace any necessary file.
EDIT: Unless it's one of the settings in "Settings > Confirmations" but it does not appear to do so, either that or it's not worded very clearly.

2.

Mail protection wizard

MS Outlook or Exchange clients are automatically protected by avast! and there is no need to set anything. To protect other e-mail clients, like Outlook Express or Eudora, it is necessary to change some settings to make the mail protection fully functional.
This is true up to avast! 4.5. If you use avast! 4.5 or newer and your operating system is Windows NT, 2000, XP, 2003, Vista or 2008, you don't have to do any special settings, even for other email clients. avast! 4.5 features a new method of email protection that is very easy for the user - it works completely automatically.

The avast! package contains the Mail Protection Wizard that can be used for easy settings of mail protection. This program can be started via Start button on Windows taskbar, Start > Programs > avast! Antivirus > Mail Protection Wizard.
However this wizard does not seem to have been installed on either of my XP or Vista PC.
Possibly because it's automaticly configured on these later versions.

3. No, again not that I am aware of. Although I do know it works from the occasional warning that is given.

No offence meant, but it is better to address such questions on the open forum other than through PM's.
That way you will get a more varied and possibly quicker response.

Tue Jan 20, 2009 1:36 pm Topic: Avast mail scanner
Hello again phil, just a small problem this time, its that i cant send an e-mail to myself and i dont know if its avasts fault/or it has some inbuilt protection thinking my mail has been hijacked etc.

The following message to <xxxxxxxurse@taktalk.net> was undeliverable. (altered by oldfogy)
The reason for the problem:
5.1.0 - Unknown address error 554-'5.7.1 <smtp-out-4.talktalk.net[62.24.128.234]>: Client host rejected: Access denied'

Ive checked the settings in avast and done a google, but no help

Munty.
Have you made sure the spelling is correct?
Although I doubt that it is the fault of Avast.

Thanks.

Just to update this thread.
The problem was sending a email back to himself they were being returned as undeliverable, unfortunately this was due to a typing error in the address to send the email to.

Glad it is now sorted and problem solved.

Did you or anyone ever resolve the problem of not having to tell Avast what to do each time a possible virus was found when running a scan?

However with a slight variation on the question I think I may have found a way around the problem of the Avast notification of "each possible virus alert" when carrying out a system scan. Although it's not perfect it does work.

First of all go to "Settings" then go to "Confirmation" now in the bottom panel marked "Uncheck confirmation message to disable them (and vice versa)" then remove the checkmark on the line that says "Message when error occurred during results processing" (second line down)

By removing the checkmark from the box detailed above, if during a scan you receive a warning.
What you must then do is to place a checkmark in the box that says "Don't show this dialog next time" then press "Continue"
The scan will then continue and give the complete results at the end of the scan without notifying you of any other occurrences, you must then decide what to do with the result (if any).

However, because you need to wait for that first message to appear which may take some time, what I did was create a folder and place a file (Keygen) in it which I know is not a virus although it keeps being flagged as a virus if I try to open it.

I named this folder "1 TEST" (without the quotes) and placed it in my C: root drive.
(Any name will do, but it must start with the number 1 then it will always be the first folder in the list to be scanned)

Now when a scan is run that folder is checked first, and almost straightaway I can then place the tick in the box and continue, thus leaving me then to walk away from the PC until the complete scan has finished.
