I don't use AVG, so don't know exactly what the "Update Control CTF file" is, but have you tried reinstalling AVG?

I dumped AVG several years ago in favour of "Avast", because AVG continually failed to find my internet connection and wouldn't get updates.

I used AVG for years without problems up to version 7.5.
When I upgraded to version 8, I then had various problems, including updates and slower bootup and browsing.
It also reported 2 viruses that turned out to be false positives.

So I binned AVG, and have used Avast Free for 3 months without problems ... highly recommended.

I copied all (as far as I know) of the existing Avatars from the old site to here and you didn't appear to have had one on the old site, I've just checked again.

Can you be more specific about being unable to reinstate it? There is nothing in the forum settings that should prevent you from uploading an avatar, provided it isn't over the maximum size.

I too have abandoned AVG after years of trouble free protection. Avg 8.0 was Ok for a while and then the updates started playing up causing constant protection failure.
Avast seems A1 upto now and a full thorough scan is pretty quick. Smile

As you original image shots are not showing properly (even in preview from "Quote"), can you either retry to paste the image/s or supply more info!

However, I receive a similar message because of the time that the automatic update is/was set to check for updates when the PC was switched off.

However, I originally started out using Avast and was well pleased with it, but changed over to AVG, although currently using a v7.5 Pro paid for version, but due to the amount of complaints I will also be going back to Avast when AVG expires in December.

The screenshot that I posted was actually taken from the full sized copy of Peter's one. If you click on his "thumbnail" image, the larger one should open.

It's showing now (all of them) although I did think that your screen shot was the original.
(possibly just a connection problem at my end)

However I have to admit that type of page does not look familiar or like any I can access in my AVG settings.

From http://free.avg.com/faq.num-1243:

AVG update issue - Invalid update control CTF file

If you receive the "Invalid update control CTF file" message during AVG update, most probably the update control files are corrupted. In this case it is necessary to delete these files. During a next attempt to update AVG, new control files should be downloaded and update process should be completed without any difficulties. Please kindly follow these steps to delete mentioned control files:

Download the utility from the link below to your hard drive

http://www.avg.com/filedir/util/deleteupdatefiles.exe

Run the downloaded utility (command line window will appear for a short time)

Try to update the AVG program

If the issue persists, then please follow steps below:

Double-click the My computer icon on your desktop (or open Start -> My Computer)

Navigate to the following folder:

Windows XP / 2000:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\avg8\update\download *

Windows Vista:
C:\ProgramData\avg8\update\download *

Find the avginfoavi.ctf and avginfowin.ctf files and delete them

Restart your computer

* Please note that some folders/files could be hidden. To view hidden files and folders please follow the steps below:

1. Open the folder options in Windows:

Windows XP / 2000:
Open menu Start> Settings> Control Panel> Folder options

Windows Vista:
Open menu Start> Control Panel> Appearance and Personalization> Folder options

2. Click on the View tab and enable the Show hidden files and folders option.

~~~~~
If anyone tries this, please let us know how you get on.
Hi Steph,
your solution should be fine as it's the same I have posted on CA for AVG update problems and the members there all said it fixed the problem.
This is the link I gave which has a small script to automate the job of deleting the files for you.
