Hi Mike. I have the 2 adapter usbs plugged in, ran through the software etc. I've been fiddling for 2 hours so maybe I'll stick with bullet points as to how far I've got, and what I think I've done. :? Have set host as 'access' and client as 'station' Called it an infrastructure rather than ad hoc as that seems to work better. They recognise each other and the 3rd party software graphs suggest both are working fine. Windows says the station one is not connected. Have enabled internet connection sharing on my modem Have disabled local area connections on both pcs Tried running them on channel 6 (default), 1 and 12 but without success. Have told station to only connect on it's own if no other connection available (it has it's own modem which was used to connect directly) Both SSIDs are the same Have enabled wep on both Think that's it but may have missed something. I hope that helps as there must be a zillion things things that make then go wrong, I don't know where you could start advising from! Thank you very much for your time. DM

I was going to post a screenshot of the software showing a drop down box in the top right which lets you choose whether it's station or access but can't see a way to do it here - sure you get the idea though! I can't copy and paste from the manual either but it basically says (in contradiction to you) that an ad hoc network cannot access the internet. It agrees that an access point is needed to provide an infrastructure and suggests that if I have an access point to use it! I appreciate an access point is usually a router but I thought as it gave me the option of making my host an access point, that it would do! Rebooting the 2nd machine made no difference. I changed both to ad hoc and station but now the client has lost it's signal. IP is correct. DM

Think I've done it! Manually made sure the host was connecting to WLAN_AP, then manually made the client connect to the modem! Can get the internet to work but am I supposed to be able share files too? I have enabled this on both pcs and put a document in the shared folder on the host but I can't see it on the client. DM

| This "access" and "station" is something new to me. If the manual is a pdf file, can you email a copy to me? forums#mgmcc.org.uk (replace # with @) | Quote: | | it basically says (in contradiction to you) that an ad hoc network cannot access the internet. |
It cannot on its own because it is a direct network between your two computers, but if Internet Connection Sharing is enabled in the "host" PC, the "client" will have internet access. _________________ Mike

Have our replies crossed path in flight? I have found I can click the share this folder in My Documents so am currently fiddling with that (I never had the side toolbar open until tonight so wasn't familiar with it!) DM

Sorry, If I could post screen shots it would make more sense! On the left is a box which lists the SIDD and it's strength. In the list (on both pcs) are the modem and WLAN_AP. If I click on one, a panel on the right gives me current network information and a button labeled 'Connect this site'. On the host I clicked WLAN_AP and then the connect button. On the client I clicked the moden and then connected. Have since rebotted the client and it now defaults to the modem and insists on being an infrastructire even though I change it ad hoc. It is now connecting on channel 1 and the host on 12 - but the internet still works fine so I don't think I need to worry do I? I could email some screen shoots in word with some info if that would help? DM

Think I've finally cracked it! On the client, connect to modem for internet, connect to WLAN_AP for documents - YIPPEE!!!!! Host to always be connected to WLAN_AP. Now just need to concern myself with security settings I guess. DM

| Got your email with the Word document and screenshots, thanks. It appears that the reason both of your computers are online is that your Host PC is connected directly to your modem, your Client PC is connected to someone else's unsecured wireless network running a BT Home Hub router. (Unless, you actually have a BT Home Hub in which case we're "barking up the wrong tree".) This would certainly explain why I have been totally mystified by the way you have set things up and also how you've managed to connect your "Client" to an "Infrastructure" network. _________________ Mike

If setting the "Client" to WLAN_AP works for file sharing, then that is also the setting you should be using to connect with the "Host" PC's shared internet connection. The "Client" PC should be getting an IP address in the 192.168.0.x range by DHCP from the "Host" PC. _________________ Mike

If you looked at the host image you can see that it IS a BT Homehub so I don't think I'm nicking the neighbours bandwidth? However, the IP is 192.168.1.66! It is by DHCP though. I'm currently using the host machine whilst running the BBCi player on the client to see how it affects the speed of the host, haven't noticed any difference yet and wonder if I should? DM Edit: Just remembered - my partner's son could always get a signal on his wifi laptop when he visited and they used it for online gaming so it must have been a decent signal. This was always whilst my client machine was connected directly to the phone socket/internet but not always switched on. Not sure if that's relevant?!

Hang on! I don't have a BT Home hub!!!!!!! I have a speedtouch usb modem on the host and a Voyagaer 105 usb modem on the client! Just went upstairs and noticed the BBCi player had stopped and the connection dropped. Have changed it to connect to WLAN_AP and will wait to see if it reconnects. Interestingly (maybe), the signal from the host to the BT Hub is only 13%, the signal from the client to the hub was 56%. My client pc is probably about 5 feet away from the neighbours pc - wall inbetween of course. Crumbs! I don't mind tapping into theirs ( ), but how do I stop them tapping into mine? DM

Hmmm, guess I'm back to stage one. The client's internet won't work via WLAN_AP and the IP is 169.254.95.954, peer to peer, no mention of DHCP. DM
