| Have posted on the PCA forum re security settings as I didn't think you were around. I posted earlier to say I had enabled WEP but want to find out more about the settings. I had hoped you would respond to my final post which I thought demonstrated that I wanted to get my own network straight. The fact that you didn't respond to the final post (in my mind) implies that you are cross with me for joking about accessing my neighbours bandwidth. I am actually a highly honest and responsible person and had planned to knock on my neighbours door tomorrow to find out if it is them with the BT hub and then advise them to check the settings if so. Never mind that we barely say 2 words to each other and have a shared footpath to our houses and drive way ................ What more can I say? Maybe you were busy but that response implies I am no longer welcome here. :? DM |

| You are connecting to someone else's wireless network - you should stop immediately because it's illegal. You don't have any wireless network in your own setup, you just have two modems. For you to be able to set up a wireless network in your home, you need to buy a wireless router. The router is connected to your broadband line, and to your host PC with an ethernet cable. Then you set up your own router to broadcast the wireless network using WAP security with a password for access. Finally, you can only connect one modem or router to your broadband line. If you want to network computers with a modem (instead of a router) they must be connected using ethernet cables. _________________ I realised I was dyslexic when I went to a toga party dressed as a goat. |

We are actually trying to set up an "Ad Hoc" wireless network with Internet Connection Sharing in the Host PC. This does work, because I've set up my wireless adapters this way several times, and it does avoid the additional cost of a router, as long as the Host PC can be left running. _________________ Mike

| Finally got there! Am typing this on my client pc, connected through my host and NOT next doors BT hub. Took some to get there - had to uninstall and reinstall the adaptors, found I could only have a 10 figure encryption key and had to fiddle with internet options and LAN settings but I've made it! Thank you very much for all your help Mike, very, very much appreciated. DM |

| Glad you've got there in the end. I can't remember if you also wanted to share folders and/or printers with the other PC. Post back if you want to go down that route too! _________________ Mike

| And it's thanks from me too - up until now, I didn't know a thing about ad-hoc networks. _________________ I realised I was dyslexic when I went to a toga party dressed as a goat. |

One point about Ad Hoc networks, the 802.11g specification requires that Wireless Network Adapters are able to connect at 54Mbps in an "Infrastructure" network (i.e. to a Wireless Access Point), but only need to connect at 11Mbps in an Ad Hoc network. My adapters were only connecting at 11Mbps while testing. _________________ Mike

| Help Mike! My network has gone down! It all went wrong last week when the person using the host shut it down whilst I was replying in a forum like this on the client. When I went to connect again the next day it wouldn't, I didn't think it would make any difference but unless it is a coincidence - it has. I have run the repair wizard on both and they can't find any problems. Both network icons say the connection is good and the signal is strong. The host cannot view the client's docs and vice versa. And the client cannot access the internet. Oh yes, and both are trying to send packets but neither are receiving. PLEASE advise what I should check next - something's gone wrong somewhere and I could cry DM |

| Dave, This is the "Ad Hoc" wireless network we set up without a router. _________________ Mike
