PostSubject: Help intermittent connection problems   Mon Oct 20, 2008 10:24 am

Hi
I frequently experience problems with my network and the internet connection.
Set up is
Netgear DG834GT connected to PC via LAN cable and to HP Laserjet 2600n via LAN cable
Wireless connection to mine & my wife's laptops
Intermittent problem of loss of internet connection although the task bar still shows connected to internet @ 6mbps (or thereabouts)
Internet supoplier is Eclipse

Normal solution is to switch of router medem wait and switch on again, sometime the process of acquiring the IP address takes what seems for ever
Network controller NVIDIA nforce networking controller
I've changed the LAN cable and the LAN socket used and still get intermittent problems although on occasion I can have a day without a problem
I've noticed that sometimes the connection shows limited connectiviy and then suddenly "connection made" shows.
The Router was set up for my wife (wirelessly) before we were together and I've connected to it.
I have a spare router from my old setup prior to moving a LINKSYS G ADSL Gateway WAG 200G WHICH WAS SET UP FOR Wanadoo, is there any point in trying that as my router/modem
The telephone connection is unfortunately not to the main BT socket but to an extension (the main socket is downstairs which would cause problems in itself)

Any ideas anyone?

Albie

That's a strange speed for it to be displaying. Normally, when using a router, the speed indicated in the system tray would be either 100Mbps for a "wired" ethernet connection or 54Mbps for "wireless", i.e. the speed at which computer and router are communicating, not the internet speed. A USB modem on the other hand would show the internet connection speed.

As far as the loss of connection is concerned, I would be inclined to try using fixed IP addresses in the 192.168.0.x range (for Netgear, your Linksys probably uses 192.168.1.x addresses) and see if that gives better reliability. You could try using your old router provided it wasn't supplied as part of a package by Wanadoo and locked to their service.

Thanks Mike
The LAN shows 100mbps but the internet is connected at 6mbps
How do I change to fixed IP?
The Linlsys is not locked it was used to replace a speedtouch modem

Open the Network Connections folder ("Start > Run", type ncpa.cpl and click OK), right click the "Local Area Connection" or "Wireless Network Connection", as appropriate, and select Properties. Highlight the entry for "Internet protocol (TCP/IP)" in XP [or the TCP/IPv4 entry in Vista] and click the Properties button. In the Properties sheet that opens, select "Use the following IP address" and type in:

IP address - 192.168.0.7 (which shouldn't conflict with any other existing addresses)

Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway - 192.168.0.1 (the Router's IP address)

DNS Server address - 192.168.0.1 (the Router's IP address)

Click OK back through the open windows.

To revert to automatic IP addressing, reset both:

Obtain an IP address automatically

and

Obtain DNS server address automatically

No, each computer in a network must have a unique IP address. The (Netgear) router's address is 192.168.0.1, so other computers in the network must have their own address in the range from 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.254

If you were to change to the Linksys router, its IP address is 192.168.1.1, so other computers connected to it must have an address between 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.254

The Subnet Mask, Default Gateway and DNS Server addresses are the same for all networked computers.

Thank you Mike,
I assume that if using my laptop away from home I have to revert to automatic addressing

The simple answer is "yes", revert to automatic addressing if connecting to a different wireless network.
