PostSubject: Getting printer server to work   Sun Jan 18, 2009 3:35 pm

Hi, a happy new year to one and all. On Mike's advice on another forum, I bought a Lynksys PSUS4 to allow printing from two computers. Following an internet fault, I kept swapping out routers/cables etc. to prove the fault out to line, and since then I have been unable to get the print server to network. I think it's something to do with the router/p.c. memorising previous port configurations. What I'd like to do is to reset everything to day one and re-install the print server, and reconnect my p.c.s & printer from scratch. I've tried resetting my router and print server, but to no avail. Print server is Lynksys PSUS4 and the router is a BT voyager 2110 and XP is doing the doing. Any help would be most appreciated, regards, moxy.

It's so long ago since I set mine up that I'm not even sure where to begin. From memory, there are three things you need to have configured:
  • The Print Server's IP address.
  • Recognition by the Print Server of the Printer attached to it.
  • The creation of the Virtual Printer Port in each PC that prints via the server.

I have actually given mine a fixed IP address of 192.168.3.30 (my Router is 192.168.3.1), so that I know what its address is. If allocated dynamically by DHCP, its address is unknown which makes it inaccessible. By typing 192.168.3.30 into my browser, I can open its configuration pages directly:

Not sure if that helps, but make sure (a) each PC does have the Virtual Printer Port, by running the CD if necessary, and (b) that the correct Printer is set in the server's configuration.

Thanks, Mike, what has/is happening that by swapping routers the IP addresses have been allocated intitially and then re-allocated automatically. I was hoping to zero everything and start afresh. I'll have another tinker, thanks again. moxy.

When you run the CD, it should find the Print Server and one of its configuration pages does let you set either a fixed IP address or allocation by DHCP. What you need to be careful to avoid is setting a fixed IP address in the range used by one router and then swapping routers to one using a different range. Therefore, if you do set a fixed IP address make sure you make a note of it.
