OK, taking this a step further - access your 'Test' folder in the USB drive over the network from the Vista laptop. Right click a blank area in the folder's window, select "New" and then "Text Document". This should create a new Notepad file called "New Text Document.txt" which you should then be able to open with Notepad in the Vista Laptop. Has that worked?

Sorry for the long pause.

Yes, that works. I now have a new (blank of course) text document on the laptop which I can open in Notepad.

Just to be absolutely clear, you should have a new text document in the USB flash drive, which is plugged in to the XP PC and "shared" so that you can open it over the network with the Vista Laptop. Correct?

Now see if you can do the same thing but create the text document in one of the XP PC's own "shared" folders instead of the USB drive.

Mike
I can see how easily I can cause confusion with ambiguous wording. So:

- I have created from the laptop a text document in the newly-created shared folder located on the USB flash drive on the PC, and can access it from the laptop. I can insert and edit text in the text file.
- For information. When I click on the PC's name in the Network section of the laptop it only lists all the shared files on the PC . It does not specifically say that the above folder is on Drive F: (the USB flash drive).
- I have now successfully created from the laptop a text file in one of the old shared folders located on the PC's C: drive. After several false starts I can now access and edit this text file just like the file on the F: drive.

Sorry for the slow progress, but for some reason I keep dropping my network connection and have to restart both computers.

I posted a link to the "ElderGeek" last night but unfortunately put it into the wrong thread
"Link below" might also be worth taking a look at.

Hopefully not wanting to confuse anything more than what it already is, but one point that is pointed out is if the network consists of XP Home & XP Pro.

If I am reading this correctly then yes, you will see the file "it's on the same machine"

Can I make a suggestion here please?
Instead of referring to Laptop or PC. Refer to XP or Vista.
It is not that relevant what the machine is, but it might help in-case something is being overlooked.

I don't think you are reading it correctly:

I have created from the laptop [Vista] a text document in the newly-created shared folder located on the USB flash drive on the PC [XP], and can access it from the laptop [Vista].

The file is therefore being created and accessed over the network in the remote computer.

Yes, I think I can see where I was getting confused.
I'll just leave it at that, not wanting to cause any more confusion, but will keep looking in.

That is correct. What it actually shows is the "share name" that you allocate when you set a drive or folder as a network share.

It does appear that your network is now functioning correctly, although there may be a problem with the Microsoft Word program itself, as it seems to be malfunctioning when trying to open a document located on the remote computer.

Mike
Thanks to you I can now see a way forward. From your step-by-step analytical approach it is clear there is no fundamental problem, and I can now try things like uninstalling and re-installing MS Office. Many thanks for your help to someone operating at the limit of their technological experience. Much appreciated.
