PostSubject: Internet connection access (Wireless?)   Thu Aug 06, 2009 3:27 pm

Hi,

I am back to an old problem which I thought had gone away - but now it's back.

I have 3 PC's all running Vista HP.
My ISP is Virgin media
My router is a Netgear DG834G v.4 (supplied by Virgin media in May/June 2009)
PC 1 - Desktop PC connected to Router via RJ45 cable - No issues Internet is always OK
PC 2 Toshiba Laptop 2.4 years old
PC 3 Comaq Laptop 1.8 years old

The issue is with the laptops
Thye Internet connection via the desktop is fine

The Laptops are seeing the connection (Both Laptops are having the same problem connecting)
If I right click on the taskbar icon (2 monitors with red X) my wireless network connection is visible showing 5 green bars (signal strength = Excellent) Seciurity is WPA-PSK and my SSID name is showing.
If I click on connect, the window shows "Connecting to "My SSID".

("My SSID" is not my SSID but I don't want to display this information, so where I have quoted "My SSID" this should be my real SSID - if you follow )

After a few moments, a window appears "Windows can not connect to "My SSID"
Options = Diagnose the problem or Connect to a different network.
Option 1 = Diagnose the problem
2 choices = View available wireless networks (all this does is take me round in a circle back to not connecting)
2nd choice Click for information on troubleshooting Low wireless signal quality problems (Laptop is sitting 2 feet away from the router!)
4 options = 1 Computer too far from the router - 2 feet away
wireless router is turned off - Xirrus wifi monitor is showing my SSID as on it's system.
Interference?
Network not broadcasting SSID - as above network is showng SSID and strength is excellent.

There is an option to view Network Dignostic events...
This has given some information. The main one appears to be: "... Windows can not connect to "My SSID" Wireless association failed because Windows did not receive any response from the wireless router or access point..." The solution to this is to "troubleshoot low quality wireless problems..."!!!

Now - where do I go from here!

Try disabling the WPA security and see if the Laptops can connect to the "unsecured" network.

Or perhaps a simple reboot of the router?

Also - try another channel.

Having been on the phone to Virgin, we did several things.

1. Reset the router to the factory default settings and reflashed the firmware.
2. Changed channels

These didn't solve the problem on their own.

However we found that we could connect using no encryption, but not when we put the WPA passphrase in.

Eventually we used a totally different passphrase, and the Laptops both connected straight away.

There's nowt so wierd as Computers!!!

They have both been OK so far to-day

Thanks for the advice - Dave Smile
