| Hi, I am experiencing problems with my Internet access. I connect to the Internet using a Linksys WAG200G Router/Modem, which I have had for 1 to 2 years as a free replacement for my WAG54G which failed. I connect to Virgin Media, with whom I have been for about 7 years, with PAYG dialup, 24/7 dialup, and now Broadband. I have to say, I have been very satisfied with Virgin over all these years. The Problem now is that 2 o0r 3 days ago I had all green lights on my Router, but got no Internet. I contacted Virgin, by phone, and was told there was a problem with the "DNS server". It would be sorted within 2 hours. Later that day I rebooted the router and acheived a connection. Shortly afterwards, My "Internet" light on the router went Red, and I lost Internet connection. (DSL light = OK; phone line OK). Again a reboot of the router gave me back the connection, but now every morning, the router is showing a red Internet light, which although it does turn green on a reboot, is annoying me. Surely, I should not have to reboot the router so frequently? In the past (before I lost connection 3 days ago), I never had this problem. I have recently, (13th/feb) according to Virgin, had a speed boost. I had no problems with this until 3 days ago. I have been into the router settings, and checked things like "Keep connection Alive" are enabled - they are. Can anyone give me some help here? Thanks Dave |

| I think your only option is probably to "hard reset" the Router back to its factory default settings and set it all up again from scratch. It's a bit of a pain, but should sort out any system corruption within the Router. _________________ Mike

| I have eventually managed to contact someone at Virgin Media who knew what I was on about. He has reset things at their end, and suggested I switch OFF my router for 30+ minutes, then switch it back on. (Done = OK ) then switch the router OFF about once a week (overnight - he suggested) to allow it to do something to do with something their end and he thinks it might have been timing out at their end since they had DNS problems. You probably understand what he meant, but the upshot is I have done the switching off, and restarting bit. I will switch it off once a week, and will probably reset the Router back to "Factory Default". However before I do that, I'll have to note down all the router settings!!! Thanks - Dave |

| It's always possible that the router is on it's way out so keep this in mind if things don't improve _________________ ANNE R

Yes, I think it's called "bullshit" - there are plenty of users who have left their routers connected to an ADSL service for many months with no ill effect.
However, they may have had a short-term DNS problem. You can always use the "Open DNS" server addresses in the TCP/IP Properties of your network adapter - it is possible to use fixed DNS server addresses while the IP address is still obtained automatically by DHCP. The Open DNS addresses are 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 _________________ Mike

| Anne, It was my first thought, having already had one Linksys pack up on me. Mike, I myself always leave my router on, and have done for as long as I've had it - turning it off only when leaving the house for long periods (holidays). At 5am Yesterday morning. (on way to work lol!) I noticed the router Internet Light again was Red but.... after I rebooted it, it was OK all day - was OK at 5am this morning, and is still OK now So.... was it all relating to Virgin's problem - now hopefully sorted??? Thanks again - Dave |

| Well, it isn't sorted anymore... It's been showing a red light again, which doesn't allow me internet access, until I reboot the router, when it (trhe "Internet" light) goes green and lets me on the internet. I contacted Virgin again, and explained the problem. They asked about router firmware (looks like they are trying to blame the router - (that is checkable, as I have a DLink router in my attic!)). The firmware version I have is the latest one available, (I rank Linksys to check). Whilst on the phone to Linksys, he went through the router settings as they should be. 2 things were "wrong". First: The dsl modulation was set on G.dmt (It should be, and now is Multimode) Second: The MTU was set on Auto, (He asked me to change it to Manual, and set the size to 1400 - again done) Settings saved, and router rebooted, all was OK. This morning - all green lights on the router, but... no internet connection - until I rebooted it. (Rebooted from the Router pages on the wired PC as opposed to unplugging) where now? |

| I think you need to retrieve your D-Link router from the attic and see what happens when you use that. If it performs properly, then the Linksys router is faulty. I have a Linksys router (although a Cable/DSL one as I'm on Virgin's Cable service) and if I happened to be using it around seven o'clock, morning or evening, it would frequently lose internet access and had to be rebooted. I eventually got so fed up with this that I replaced it with a D-Link one which has performed faultlessly. _________________ Mike

| Thanks Mike - I'll try this tomorrow. If it IS a faulty Linksys router thats the second Linksys one thats gone bad on me. The dlink one is I think a 624?, and maybe a bit slow. I have been told Belkin are OK? The dlink will tell me if the problem lies with the router or the Service provider. (Virgin don't seem to think the problem is at their end - so if it's still no good....... Thanks Dave |

| Hi Dave .... my neice had a Linksys that appeared to "freeze" and it often had to be rebooted , it wasn't even 12 months old but they replaced it with a Netgear and everything was fine after that. Good Luck with this _________________ ANNE R

| Despite Linksys being part of Cisco, their routers for home use do seem to be less reliable than the other leading brands. _________________ Mike

| I also experienced this problem with by Belkin router, I'm with Virgin cable. Since it was about 4 years old, I took advice to replace it, which I did with the identical model. Not experienced the disconnection problem since, so it is evident that they do wear out and need replacing every so often |

| Hi Ann, I think they all do wear out, especially as most of us leave them on 24/7 . Some models get hotter than others and I think this is a factor in them breaking down. My last Netgear one began playing up when it was about 3 years old _________________ ANNE R

| You're right about them getting hot, the one which broke worried me in case it burned through the desk towards the end |
