PostSubject: laptop says connected, but no internet   Tue Dec 30, 2008 2:22 pm

Hi,
i was referred here from the CompeterActive site.

I have a PC with XP, NOD32, Zonealarm & ie6, the laptop has XP NOD32, Windows firewall & ie7.

I connected both through wireless broadband until i had to re-install Windows on the laptop, since then i can't get the internet on the laptop. I followed the advice elsewhere on this site, i deleted the old profile, started from new & entered the network key. The laptop says it is connected, but i can't get internet. The laptop will pick up the router "home" page & it will connect OK if i use a cable. I have tried turning off the anti-virus & firewalls on both machines but no success.

grateful for any help as this is very frustrating.

thanks
John W

Hi John,

What router are you using?

Does the laptop see the wireless network?

Have you tried changing the channel that the router is broadcasting SSID on?

What IP address does the Laptop's "Wireless Network Connection" have? Open the Network Connections folder, highlight the entry for the "Wireless Network Connection" and look at its details on the left:

Have you tried running either of the Router or Windows "Wireless Setup wizard" programs?

edit
Mike.
How do you get to the page that you are showing above?
Only no-way can I seem to get that page to display.

Found it. I was using the "Use Windows classic folders" option, instead of the "Show common tasks in folder" view. (From folder options)

Thanks for all the responses. Its a BT Voyager 2091, the laptop is "seeing" all nearby networks & says its connected to my own. I don't know how to change the router channel. Can't insert a screenshot, but the info Mike asked about is

Connected
IP address:192.168.1.3
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Assigned by DHCP

Access point
Netwotk VOYAGER 2091-95
Encryption Enabled
Signal strength: Excellent

I didn't think i should have to run the wireless wizard as the laptop is "seeing" my network. I didn't say before , but the PC can still connect wirelessly, so i guess nothing wrong with the router.

If you open your web browser and type in http://216.239.59.104, does that open the Google UK page? If so, this would indicate that there is a DNS issue.

I'm just taking a "stab in the dark" but if you are seeing the above, then to access your router should be possibly "192.168.1.1"

Have you tried that, and does it show the wireless connection?
Have you also tried turning off the modem and router's power supply for 30 seconds then re-boot them back up again.

Can you, or have you tried removing the wireless connection from within "Device Manager" then re-boot the PC to let it find it again.

if i type in 192.168.1.1 , i see the router configuration manager. this shows the laptop as being connected to Broadband.

yes have tried turning router off & re-booting, and disabled/enabled the device in device manager, all to no avail

My original thought was the firewall, but as you said you had: -
>> I have tried turning off the anti-virus & firewalls

You don't by any chance have more than one firewall do you?
If using your own firewall, have you checked to make sure the windows firewall is not activated as well.

Failing that I'm at a loss to think of anything else to suggest.
(My friend had exactly the same problem only this morning, but fortunately re-booting the modem cured his problem)

Have a look at the security settings for Internet Explorer - it could be they are set too high. Medium for all settings is usually fine.

Also, connect with the cable and download, then install Firefox. Set it as your default browser and then see if you can connect using FF.

Internet security is set to medium. I have already tried Firefox, but same result.

At the weekend i can take the laptop to a friends to see if it will connect with his network, that might give a clue as to the problem

I am not sure exactly how (luck & persistance) but its now working. When the Internet Explorer could not connect....page comes up there is a diagnose the problem button(which i tried) and an activity log. I looked at this (more in hope) & saw a number of entries along the same lines, "Gateway not valid". I looked at PC Gateway & it was 192.168.1.1, the laptop was 192.168.0.1. I didn't know if they should be the same or different, but i changed the laptop Gateway to match the PC, and to my surprise it worked.

So am i correct in thinking that the Gateway should be the same, but the IP address should be different. It probably makes more sense to you than me, i am just glad that its working. But i do wonder why they had different Gateways?

Many thanks for all the replies. A very nice forum.

John
